Hello from Halls Gap, again,
Today was spent visiting a couple of the many lookouts in the Grampians, and driving a few of the many roads criss-crossing them (the Grampians, not the lookouts), ranging from sealed, to gravel, to 4WD tracks. I did two loops from Halls Gap, one before lunch, and one after, covering only 145km.
The highlight of the day was the Mt Cassel Fireline track. It’s the worst (and hence paradoxically, the best) 4WD track I’ve attempted to date. It wasn’t the steepest ascent or descent I’ve done, but it’s definitely the roughest. It’s a bit disconcerting to sometimes have only three wheels on the ground, and for a few seconds, only two, as the front wheel that’s in the air starts to lower, and the diagonally opposite rear wheel rises. It was probably a bit foolhardy attempting it by myself, with noone knowing where I was, but that added to the thrill. At times I was wondering whether I’d brought enough underwear with me.
Cheers,
Julian
