Greetings from Sarina,

I left Charters Towers around 7:45 this morning, after refilling the tank. Even though I’m homeward bound, I had to head north-east towards Townsville. Some 40km from Townsville, I was able to cut east, from Woodstock to Giru (it should have been called Guru!), then south along the Bruce Highway. Lunch was taken in Proserpine around midday, and the tank was topped up further down the road at Bloomsbury. After passing through Mackay (the biggest city I’ve encountered since leaving Wollongong, population-wise;  Mount Isa lays claim to being the world’s first/second biggest city, area-wise), the motel in Sarina was arrived at around 2pm. After checking in, I checked out the beer garden at the pub across the road, where I sampled a couple of James Squire’s Amber Ales, on-tap.

I’ve no incidents to report today, although all the traffic and towns along the Bruce Highway took a little getting used to, after the last “six days and six nights in the wilderness”.

Today’s trip was 503km; I’ll be heading for Maryborough tomorrow, which should be around 650km.

Cheers,
Julian
