Greetings all, from Bendigo (again),
Last night, I told the “innkeeper” (who’s a sports car enthusiast; he’s got a very nice Austin-Healey that he restored) that I’d stay another day if the weather was good (and it was good). This morning, I walked (I needed the exercise, since I’ve been sitting on my arse in the car for the last two days) the 4km in to the town centre (and back) from the motel, to check out the many wonderful Victorian (adjectival for the late British monarch, not the state named after her) buildings that have survived. In my opinion, the finest is the Shamrock Hotel; a huge, beautifully restored, 5-story building, built in 1854, with a wrought-iron collonade at street level and verandah on the second floor. The cathedral isn’t bad either, if you’re into churches. I didn’t do any touristy stuff, like taking the “Talking Tram”, or go down the Central Deborah mine.
Since it was a lovely, sunny, 25 C day, I drove to Echuca for lunch. I grabbed a turkey salad roll from Subway, and ate it on the banks of the Campaspe River (an ugly bloody thing actually; narrow, slow flowing, and a dark browny-grey colour; maybe I should have done the touristy thing, and gone to the “Historic” wharf on the Murray!). To fill in the rest of the afternoon, I drove to Shepparton, then back to Bendigo. Sorry, no pictures today.
Tomorrow, I’m heading back down south, towards the Great Ocean Road, via Ballarat and Geelong. I’m not sure where I’m gonna end up for the night.
Cheers,
Julian
