Greetings from Torquay,
Well, I didn’t make it very far along the Great Ocean Road, as Torquay is right at the start!
I didn’t get away until 8 this morning, as I couldn’t get breakfast any earlier than between 7:30-8:00. The sky was overcast, and although it had rained during the night, it didn’t appear to me as if it was going to rain, so I departed with the roof down. However, about 5km down the road it started raining, just heavily enough to force me to stop and raise the roof! I headed for Sale, where I filled up the tank (which thankfully I have to do much less often than in the Zuke, due to the better fuel economy and larger tank). At Sale, I turned off the Princes Highway towards Yarram, where I arrived around 10:15, bought some Cheese and Bacon rolls, and consumed one for morning coffee. Although it was no longer raining, it was threatening to do so, so I left the roof up. It was then off to Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula, via Foster, Leongatha, Korumburra and Tooradin, where I eventually put the roof down.
I arrived in Sorrento shortly after 1:30pm, hoping to grab some lunch. However, I could see the ferry coming in, and not knowing how long it took to turn around, I decided to board, rather than miss it while getting lunch, and then have to wait another hour for the next ferry. I was on board by 1:45, but it didn’t depart until 2:00. I was off the ferry in Queenscliff by 2:45, after a very pleasant and scenic voyage across the entrance of Port Phillip Bay. There I checked my trusty road atlas and accommodation guide, and decided I’d overnight in Torquay, after calling ahead to ensure a room was available. I had a belated lunch of a couple of my C&B rolls, then headed off, arriving about in Torquay around 3:45.
I’m afraid I don’t have a view of Torquay from my motel room (“what did you expect to see from the window of a Torquay hotel room; a herd of wildebeest…?”). After settling in, I went for the usual walk around town. Since the motel restaurant is closed tonight, I took the opportunity to sus out where I could have dinner. It’s a toss up between Mexican and Chinese.
I’m heading for Victor Harbour in South Australia tomorrow, although I’m not sure that I’ll make it that far.
Cheers,
Julian
