G’day all, from Glenelg,

Left Warrnambool at around 8am. The breakfast menu at the motel included an option of a packed lunch for the next day (a couple of sangers, a piece of cake and a piece of fruit), so I opted for that, for a change from my usual C&B rolls. At Portland, I left the Princes Highway to take an alternate route to Mt Gambier. I had the cake (a fruit mince pie, actually) and a coffee at about 10am someways along, on the side of road, sitting next to my car on a red tartan picnic rug. For some reason, people were craning their necks to gawk at me as they drove past?

Although I still had a third of a tank left, I topped it up in Mount Gambier, as there’s bugger all towns of any size between there and Murray Bridge, and I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to get the higher octane petrol that my car requires. Had one of the sangers (ham, cheese and salad) for lunch at a rest area on the outskirts of Mount Gambier, then headed for Adelaide. It’s a long, dry, mostly treeless trip, and the road is mostly flat and straight. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the drive, particularly the bit along the Coorong, from Kingston SE (I’ve no idea what the SE stands for, but it’s got “The Big Lobster”) to Meningie. I was gonna have the second sanger for afternoon “coffee” somewhere along there, but I couldn’t find a spot with any shade!

On reaching the outskirts of Adelaide, I decided to stay in Glenelg, rather than the city, as I’d stayed in Glenelg a couple of times in the mid ’80s when the Formula 1 Grand Prix was held in Adelaide. I spotted a Vintage Cellars store just up the road from the motel, so after checking in, I dropped in to see if they had any Chimay Blue, Lucky for me, they did, so I grabbed a half dozen, and I’m enjoying one (or two …) while I type this note.

Sorry, no photos again, but this is a “driving” trip, not a sight-seeing trip. I’ve no idea where I’m heading tomorrow, yet.

Cheers,
Julian
