Hello again from Narooma,
After a 7:30 breakfast, I took a short walk about town, to find a bakery for provisions. I headed off in the car at 8:20, heading south along the Princes Highway to Cobargo, the turnoff point to the Wadbilliga National Park, which lies to the west. I arrived there about 8:55, and filled the half depleted diesel tank. I arrived at the Wadbilliga River Crossing around 10, after a slow, but enjoyable drive, with the smell of eucalyptus heavy in the air.
I was underway again at 10:30. The track on the other side of the crossing, which climbs up to the tablelands, was said to be 4WD only, but I don’t think it was any worse that the 2WD track to the crossing. On the way up there were a couple of spots in shaded gullies where rainforest type flora proliferated, in contrast to the usual domination of eucalypts.
Once on the flat again, the track passed through private property for a few kilometers, before reaching a minor road between Braidwood and Nimmitabel. I headed north towards the Tuross Cascades camping area, where I arrived at 12. I’d finished lunch by 12:30, and because I wasn’t making as good a time as I had anticipated, I decided not to do either the 20 minute walk to the cascades, or the hour walk to the falls, that I had previously contemplated.
The plan was head to east, to Bodalla, mainly along forestry roads, with oneĀ short section of fire trail down a long ridge to the coastal plain. That plan was thwarted when at about 1:15, I encountered a tree across the fire trail. There was a much longer section of fire trail to the north that I could have tried, but I was concerned that the same thing might happen. So I decided I should return home via a “real” road. The shortest way was back south the way I’d come, then on to Nimmatebel, east along the Snowy Mountains Highway to the Princes Highway near Bega, and back north to Narooma. I was back in my motel room by 4:30.
Here’s the route map, with locations of photographs and/or stopping places.
Cheers,
Julian
